The mid level managerial development program is a 8-10 month continuous development program
designed to equip mid level managers with the essential leadership competencies to enable them to
perform at an optimum level in the complex business environment.
There is a critical need to develop mid level leaders as:
a. Mid level managers form the critical layer connecting the business strategy to the layer
executing the strategy.
b. Need leadership competencies in addition to managerial skills.
c. Greater responsibility and increased complexity makes the role tougher.
d. Mid level managers drive performance, need to take tough decisions and mentor others.
Some of the key leadership competencies required to perform at an optimum level in this role are :
a. Effective communication.
b. Planning and resource management.
c. Ownership and accountability
d. Drive performance.
e. Decision making and problem solving.
f. Team work and collaboration.
g. Emotional intelligence and interpersonal effectiveness
The developmental approach which we use is based on the following design:
a. Use the 10/20/70 approach to developing desired competencies.
b. Long term approach: 8- 10 month horizon of the development program.
c. Includes 10% formal learning ( workshop approach based on experiential learning format)
d. 20% learning from others through application of learning at workplace and a facilitated action
e. 70% on the job learning: apply learning in work environment through a business project,
mentoring framework to be set up to support the participants during the project
f. Project presentation to ensure learning shared with all participants.
g. Gamification techniques used to ensure high interest level and develop spirit of healthy
competition amongst participants.
A sample program design is given below:
a. One day workshop ( workshop 1) : Effective communication, emotional intelligence and
interpersonal effectiveness and team work and collaboration.
b. One month of on job application of learning of workshop 1.
c. One day action learning session: Facilitated learning from other’s experience of application of
learning of workshop 1 at workplace.
d. One day workshop ( workshop 2): Planning and resource management, ownership and
accountability, drive performance and decision making and problem solving.
e. One month of on job application of learning of workshop 2.
f. One day action learning session: Facilitated learning from other’s experience of application of
learning of workshop 2 at workplace.
g. Selection of business projects utilizing the competencies in consultation with the managers of
h. Half day mentoring workshop for designated mentors from the organization.
i. Half day program to establish mentoring relationships and group rules.
j. 3-5 months : Implementation of business project. Group coaching of all the teams
implementing business project once a month by experienced and certified coach.
k. Presentation of business project on completion to senior management.
